Which OmniSlotBox Is Right for Me?

The OmniSlotBox lineup: Prime, Emulator, XMR and OmniSlotBox 4

All four OmniSlotBox systems let you enjoy digital and analog slot cars on a Carrera Digital track, but they don't all accomplish that in the same way.

The biggest decision is whether you want true analog operation or our simpler Emulator system.

From there, choosing among the true-analog systems comes down primarily to the number of lanes, features, installation preferences and budget.

This guide explains the differences.

The Short Answer

Choose OmniSlotBox Prime if you want our full-featured two-lane true-analog/digital system, including built-in voltage and amperage meters.

Choose OmniSlotBox XMR if you want true analog performance in a smaller, less expensive package and will use a power supply with its own voltage and amperage meters.

Choose OmniSlotBox Emulator if you want the simplest and most economical way to add analog-car capability to a Carrera Digital track while continuing to use Carrera-compatible digital controllers.

Choose OmniSlotBox 4 if you want a four-lane Carrera track with true analog and digital operation. OSB 4 does not include meters because most four-lane installations use metered power supplies, making additional meters in the switch box redundant.

Important: The Emulator and the three true-analog OmniSlotBox systems are fundamentally different products. The best choice depends on the kinds of cars and controllers you want to use.

OmniSlotBox Prime — Our Full-Featured Two-Lane System

Best for: Racers who want maximum versatility from a conventional two-lane Carrera Digital 132/124 track.

Prime is the current name for the system originally sold simply as the OmniSlotBox.

In Digital mode, your Carrera Digital system operates normally.

Flip the switch to Analog mode and the track becomes a true analog raceway. Each lane can be powered independently, and you can use conventional analog controllers and an enormous range of analog slot cars without installing digital decoders in them.

That includes not only contemporary 1/32 cars but also vintage cars, 1/24 cars and high-powered commercial-style cars that can exceed the current capacity of digital decoder systems.

Prime also incorporates voltage and amperage meters, providing convenient monitoring at the OmniSlotBox itself.

Prime is the system for someone who wants one Carrera layout to serve as both a serious digital raceway and a serious analog raceway with the most complete feature set built into the system.

Choose this system if:

  • You have a two-lane Carrera Digital track.
  • You want true analog rather than decoder-based analog emulation.
  • You want to use conventional analog controllers.
  • You want to run vintage, commercial or higher-current cars.
  • You want voltage and amperage monitoring built into the OmniSlotBox.
  • You want our most complete two-lane system.

OmniSlotBox XMR — True Analog Without Redundant Meters

Best for: Racers who want the important performance capabilities of true analog OmniSlotBox operation in a smaller and less expensive system.

XMR was developed because many experienced racers already own—or plan to purchase—a good regulated power supply with built-in voltage and amperage meters.

If your power supply already tells you voltage and current, there isn't much reason to pay us to put another set of meters in the switch box.

XMR therefore concentrates on the essential job: switching a two-lane Carrera layout between Carrera Digital and true high-current analog operation.

It measures approximately 10 × 8 × 4.5 inches and works with conventional analog controllers in Analog mode.

The result is a smaller and less expensive route to the capabilities that make true-analog OmniSlotBox systems useful in the first place.

Choose this system if:

  • You want true analog operation.
  • You have or plan to use a suitable metered power supply.
  • You use conventional analog controllers.
  • You want to run high-current, vintage or commercial-style cars.
  • You prefer a smaller switch box.
  • You want to spend less than Prime without giving up true analog operation.

OmniSlotBox Emulator — A Different Approach

Best for: Carrera Digital racers who want to add analog cars without building a separate conventional analog control system.

The Emulator deserves a little more explanation because it works differently from Prime, XMR and OmniSlotBox 4.

True Analog vs. Emulated Analog

Prime, XMR and OmniSlotBox 4 physically convert the track to conventional analog operation. The Emulator does not.

Instead, the Emulator uses external decoder electronics to interpret signals from Carrera-compatible digital controllers and independently power the analog cars on each lane.

Think of it as moving the decoder out of the car and into the system.

You don't need to install a digital decoder in every analog car you want to drive. You don't need separate analog controllers. In Analog mode, you continue driving with your Carrera-compatible digital controllers.

For many home racers, that's exactly what they need.

Where the Emulator Has Limits

A decoder can only handle so much current.

The Emulator is well suited to many conventional analog slot cars, but it is not the system we recommend for high-current commercial motors, some vintage motors or other cars that can exceed decoder capacity.

The Emulator incorporates replaceable external fuses to protect its electronics, but protection doesn't turn a decoder into a high-current analog circuit.

If your goal is to explore the full range of analog slot racing—including powerful vintage and commercial equipment—choose Prime, XMR or OmniSlotBox 4 instead.

Choose this system if:

  • You primarily race typical home-scale cars.
  • You want a straightforward conversion.
  • You want to continue using Carrera-compatible digital controllers.
  • You don't want separate analog controllers and driver stations.
  • You don't need high-current true-analog capability.
  • Price and simplicity are more important than maximum analog versatility.

OmniSlotBox 4 — True Analog and Digital for Four Lanes

Best for: Racers building or converting a four-lane Carrera Digital 132/124 layout.

OmniSlotBox 4 takes the true-analog concept and expands it to a complete four-lane system.

In Digital mode, you have the advantages of Carrera Digital racing. Switch to Analog mode and all four lanes become conventional analog racing lanes using analog controllers.

This is particularly useful for clubs, larger home installations and racers who want traditional multi-lane analog competition without giving up Carrera Digital.

It also opens an interesting range of race formats. You can enjoy multi-car Carrera Digital racing and then switch the same physical circuit to traditional four-lane analog competition.

Why Doesn't OmniSlotBox 4 Have Meters?

OmniSlotBox 4 intentionally does not incorporate voltage and amperage meters.

Most four-lane users will already have—or will purchase—power supplies with their own meters. We offer suitable metered power supplies for these installations.

Putting another set of meters in the OmniSlotBox would therefore add size and cost while largely duplicating information already displayed by the power supplies.

We'd rather put the money into the functions you actually need.

Choose OmniSlotBox 4 if:

  • Your Carrera layout has four lanes.
  • You want true analog operation on all four lanes.
  • You want conventional analog controllers.
  • You want high-current analog capability.
  • You want both traditional four-lane racing and Carrera Digital racing on the same track.
  • You use or plan to use metered power supplies.

What Do We Mean by “True Analog”?

This distinction is important enough to repeat.

With Prime, XMR and OmniSlotBox 4, the car receives conventional variable DC power from the lane. The analog controller directly controls that lane just as it would on a traditional analog raceway.

That means you can use conventional analog controllers from manufacturers such as DiFalco, Professor Motor, Slot.it and others, as well as many vintage controllers.

More importantly, the system isn't relying on a small digital decoder to handle motor current.

That's what allows these OmniSlotBox systems to accommodate cars ranging from ordinary 1/32 models to vintage cars and considerably more powerful commercial-style equipment.

The Emulator achieves a similar driving objective differently. Your Carrera-compatible controller communicates with the system, and an external decoder regulates power to the analog car.

For an ordinary home-racing car, that can be a wonderfully simple solution. For a high-current motor, true analog is the better tool.

What Happens in Digital Mode?

Whichever OmniSlotBox you choose, Digital mode preserves the reason we like Carrera Digital in the first place.

Carrera Digital cars, controllers, lane changing and other digital functions operate normally when the system is switched to Digital mode.

The analog capability doesn't replace digital racing. It adds another kind of racing to the same track.

That's the entire idea behind OmniSlotBox.

Do I Need to Chip My Analog Cars?

No.

That's one of the principal reasons OmniSlotBox exists.

With a conventional Carrera Digital system, an analog car normally needs a compatible digital decoder installed before it can participate in digital racing.

With an OmniSlotBox system operating in Analog mode, the car itself doesn't need a digital decoder.

Take an analog car from your collection, put it on the track and race it.

That might be a contemporary Slot.it, NSR or Thunderslot car. It might be a vintage car you've owned for 40 years. With one of our true-analog systems, it might even be a commercial-style car with a motor far beyond the capabilities of a normal digital decoder.

Your usable collection suddenly becomes much larger.

What About Controllers?

If you want conventional analog controllers, choose Prime, XMR or OmniSlotBox 4. These systems allow you to use dedicated analog controllers in Analog mode while retaining Carrera-compatible controllers for Digital mode.

We particularly recommend XLR controller connections because they provide a fast, secure and foolproof connection. We also offer adapters for racers who need to use controllers equipped with traditional alligator clips or other connections.

If you want Carrera-compatible digital controllers for both modes, choose the Emulator. For some racers, eliminating a second set of controllers is one of the Emulator's biggest advantages.

What If I Already Have a Good Power Supply?

That makes XMR particularly attractive for a two-lane track.

Many serious racers already own regulated supplies with voltage and amperage displays. XMR was designed specifically so you don't have to buy redundant features.

The same philosophy applies to OmniSlotBox 4. Four-lane installations typically use metered power supplies, so meters are not duplicated in the switch box.

If you're starting with a two-lane installation and want voltage and amperage meters incorporated directly into the OmniSlotBox, choose Prime.

What If I Have a Four-Lane Track?

That's easy: OmniSlotBox 4.

Prime, XMR and Emulator are intended for conventional two-lane Carrera installations. OmniSlotBox 4 was designed specifically to provide four-lane true analog/digital capability.
