MR Slotcar MR1033 UOP Shadow DN4 #101 – Jackie Oliver, 1974 Can-Am Champion.
The Shadow is the standout in this MR Slotcar group. Jackie Oliver drove the black UOP DN4 to the 1974 Can-Am championship, winning at Mosport, Road Atlanta, Watkins Glen and Mid-Ohio. MR Slotcar's version is equally serious underneath: 23K power, sidewinder gearing, adjustable front ride height, machined bronze bushings and a tunable chassis architecture.
A Guide System Designed Around the Shadow's Nose
The DN4's extraordinarily low, flat nose left almost no room for a conventional vertical guide post, so MR Slotcar engineered a completely different system. The guide does not pivot in a normal guide well; instead, the broad low-profile guide rides and pivots in a circular track molded into the chassis. Three screws are used in the assembly: two secure the braid contacts and a third retains the protective/retaining piece.
That lets the guide sit unusually far forward while preserving the scale profile of the real Shadow. It is a clever solution and one of the most distinctive pieces of engineering on the car. The braid eyelets lie horizontally and are retained by a molded lip in the guide base, so braid changes are different from the usual push-in guide arrangement.
Track compatibility note: The stock guide is clearly biased toward deep commercial/wood-track slots. An independent racer measured the blade at about 25 mm long and found it deep enough to rub the bottom of parts of a Carrera circuit. Check guide depth before running on Carrera, Scalextric, Ninco or other shallow-slot plastic systems; trimming or substituting a modified spare guide may be appropriate for some tracks.
Why This Chassis Is Special
- Slot.it V12/4 23,000 RPM motor: considerably stronger than the 18.5K classic-car powerplant.
- 11/34 sidewinder gearing: compact rear drivetrain with strong acceleration and braking.
- Four-point motor-pod mounting: the motor is screwed into the pod, with the pod retained at four points for controlled tuning.
- Four-point body leveling: lets the racer square the body to the chassis rather than simply accepting molded tolerances.
- Adjustable front axle ride height: twin M2 adjusters let you set front-wheel contact and guide engagement precisely.
- Machined bronze bushings and hardened 3/32" axles: proper competition-grade running gear.
- Aluminum set-screw wheels: approximately 14.3 × 8.2 mm front and 15.8 × 10.2 mm rear.
- Optional tuning: accepts MR8025 independent front suspension hardware and tunable motor-pod springs.
What Racers Have Found
A detailed FranceSlotForum teardown found the chassis and motor pod noticeably rigid, the chassis flat, and the drivetrain free-running without the overtight assembly often seen on RTR cars. After basic race prep and magnet removal, the reviewer described the Shadow as stable, healthy and enjoyable straight away, with performance approaching established classic-racing cars after setup.
Racer's setup note: Start with guide depth, braid shape and front axle height before changing gearing or motor parts. Once the guide is fully engaged without bottoming and the front tires are doing only the amount of work you want, this very low, wide Can-Am chassis has the ingredients for excellent stability.
