Why We Built OmniSlotBox

Slot racing has never been just one kind of racing.

There are digital cars with lane changing, pit stops, fuel strategy, and sophisticated race control. There are beautifully detailed analog cars from manufacturers around the world. There are vintage cars, commercial raceway cars, high-performance 1/24 and 1/32 machines, HO cars, and decades of great slot cars that were never designed for a digital system.

The problem is enjoying all of them without needing a room full of different tracks.

That is the problem OmniSlotBox was built to solve.

Too Many Great Cars, Not Enough Tracks

Jim Cunningham has raced slot cars since the 1960s and has participated in nearly every form of the hobby—HO, 1/32, 1/24, analog, digital, vintage, commercial racing, and plenty of unusual machinery in between.

For 15 years, Jim operated a commercial slot car raceway in San Diego, eventually featuring five different tracks and selling and servicing a broad range of slot car products. He also developed a large online slot car business and a traveling raceway operation.

When you have that kind of history in the hobby, you accumulate cars. Lots of cars.

But commercial raceways closed, available space became smaller, and maintaining separate tracks for every type of slot racing was no longer practical.

The goal became simple:

Build one great track that could let us enjoy as much of the slot car hobby as possible.

A lifetime in the hobby created a simple challenge: how do you enjoy this many different kinds of slot cars on one great track?]

Why We Chose Carrera

After years of selling, servicing, and operating different slot car track systems, we chose Carrera Digital 132/124 as the foundation.

Carrera track is wide enough for cars up to 1/24 scale, and its stainless-steel rails and hard molded surface have proven exceptionally durable. We have even used Carrera track in our portable commercial raceways, where it survives repeated setup, teardown, transportation, and heavy public use.

Carrera also provides an excellent selection of track components: multiple flat and banked curve radii, shoulders, pit lanes, lane changers, and other pieces that make sophisticated layouts possible.

Adapters are now available that allow selected Scaleauto and Policar track sections to be incorporated into a Carrera-based layout, providing still more curve sizes and surface textures.

And then there is digital racing itself.

When Carrera Digital is paired with race-control software such as SmartRace, the experience can include timing and scoring, fuel strategy, pit stops, race announcements, sound effects, championship series, online reports, and scoreboards displayed on a television or other connected device. Car and race settings can even be managed from a phone.

It is an exceptionally capable platform.

Carrera provides a durable modular foundation with the track components and digital features needed for a sophisticated home or club layout.

But Digital Is Only Part of Slot Racing

Digital racing adds strategy and realism, but much of the slot car world remains analog.

Some of the fastest, most interesting, and most historic cars in the hobby were designed for conventional analog racing. Vintage cars, commercial raceway chassis, high-powered motors, HO cars, and countless modern analog models simply do not fit neatly into a digital-only system.

And sometimes analog racing is enjoyable precisely because it is different.

There is nothing quite like the feel of a good analog controller connected directly to a powerful car. There is also something wonderfully simple about putting an old favorite on the track and driving it without worrying about chips, programming, or compatibility.

At our old commercial raceway, the solution was easy: we had separate analog and digital tracks.

Most people do not have that luxury at home.

One Track, More Ways to Race

Carrera track itself can be wired for analog racing, but changing control sections, wiring, controllers, and power supplies every time you want to change modes quickly becomes inconvenient.

So we built a better solution.

The first OmniSlotBox was designed to let one Carrera-based layout serve both Digital and Analog racing, with the change made at the flip of a switch.

That idea has now grown into four different OmniSlotBox systems.

The OmniSlotBox Emulator provides the simplest entry into analog racing. It uses Carrera-compatible digital controllers and the existing digital power system to operate both Digital and Analog cars. For a racer who wants to begin exploring analog cars without adding another set of controllers and power equipment, nothing else is required.

Our other OmniSlotBox systems provide true, high-performance Analog operation. In Analog mode they use dedicated analog controllers and higher-capacity power supplies, opening the track to powerful commercial cars, vintage equipment, high-performance 1/24 and 1/32 cars, and many other cars beyond the practical limits of normal digital electronics.

Flip the switch back and the Carrera Digital system operates normally.

More Cars. More Controllers. More Ways to Race.

The purpose of OmniSlotBox was never simply to make Carrera Digital do one more trick.

It was to create a track system that could grow with the person using it.

Someone may begin with a Carrera Digital set and discover analog cars later. A longtime commercial racer may already own cars and controllers that have not had a track to run on for years. A collector may want to exercise vintage cars. A family may enjoy Digital racing one evening and simple two-lane Analog racing the next.

OmniSlotBox brings those possibilities together.

You do not have to decide that you are a “Digital racer” or an “Analog racer.”

You can be a slot racer.

Built by Slot Racers

Developing the original idea into a reliable production system brought Jim together with longtime slot racer and electromechanical specialist Rodney Weber.

Rodney also began racing slot cars in the 1960s and spent much of his professional life working with electromechanical equipment. His workshop, filled with tools, test equipment, projects, and gadgets, turned out to be a very good place to build slot car electronics.

Today, every OmniSlotBox is hand-assembled and individually tested in our Arkansas shop. Each unit receives its own serial number, build sheet, and photographic record.

Jim and Rodney still race regularly themselves, so OmniSlotBox continues to be developed the same way it began:

On the track.

You do not need eight lanes or a commercial raceway to experience an enormous variety of slot racing.

You need a track that gives you choices.

That is why we built OmniSlotBox.
